Book Review Monday: Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

First off let me just say, I have always wanted to be a writer. I've taken a creative writing class and read hundreds of books over the years. As far as writing skill goes, I am a far cry from where I hope to someday be but I'm ok with that. I'll just sit back and type away on my little corner of the web for now.

I absolutely love to read. I would eat a good book for breakfast, lunch and dinner if it were possible. Maybe if I were a goat? One of my failings as a lover of books is that I don't usually stay up to date on books that are hot off the press. I tend to judge a book by it's cover and usually select my next read off of "related searches/products" on Amazon.com. Lame, I know.

The Grisha trilogy by Leigh Bardugo has been on and off of my radar for a few years but I never could quite get a copy into my hands. I was often reading another tasty piece of literature or doing something "motherhood related" as of late. Finally after getting my Madison County Library card and perusing the "teen" section of the library's shelves, my hands landed on the first book of the series, Shadow and Bone.

Bardugo had me hooked from the first page! Her literary prowess painted the most beautiful images and sucked me deeper and deeper into her fictional world with the turn of each page. The storyline unfolded gracefully and rather quickly to reveal well developed characters, a few romantic twists and turns and opened the doors welcoming you into a world of magic, power and war unlike any other.

As I read on I came to appreciate the subtle way that Bardugo introduced me as a reader, to the land of Ravka and her inhabitants. There was just enough "big word" usage to challenge your mind but not make you feel like the book was smarter than you. I enjoyed watching the characters develop and change.

If you are a fan of heroines and villans, magic and war, love and hate then this is the book for you. It is the series for you. It is definitely the author for you, too.

Alina Starkov is just your average teenage orphan and peasant girl in love with her best friend, until in the midst of war she discovers that she's not so average and powerless after all. Being thrust into the political web of power, Alina discovers and finds herself to be much more than she thought and soon has the weight of the country on her shoulders. Her heart is torn in two by the allure of a man full of power and darkness, and the boy who has always been her best friend. Alina has to choose between the shadow and the sun, between love and power.

The plot of Shadow and Bone twists and turns with every chapter and it left me on the edge of my bed burning the midnight oil night after night to find out what would happen next!

I give this series a 10/10 for sure and would recommend it to all lovers of fantasy novels!

Why do wedding photos take up such a large chunk of our budget?

As a photographer, I am always looking at photographs. I love to flip through photo albums from my parents' childhood, peruse my elementary school yearbooks and ogle my wedding photos from last year. Of course, I also love to click through my past clients sessions and see how happy they are with their loved ones, or how they learned to be comfortable and confident in themselves while flying solo during one of our portrait sessions. As a photographer, I chat with clients about their budgets for their upcoming wedding photographs all the time. I was married about 11.89 months ago and I can speak with experience from both sides of the bride/photographer table- the most important thing that you will spend your hard earned dollars on will be your wedding photographs. It seems hard to shell out more than 1,000 dollars for something you can hire your best friend from elementary school with the nice camera and kit lens to do for an 8th of the price, right? True, they will give you a ...

2017

I honestly can't believe how quickly time seems to fly the older I've gotten. Not that I think I'm old per-say, but as the years roll on, the faster they seem to pass. 2017 has been a great year with so many fun experiences. It has also been a year that has brought challenges, big and small, old and new. In 2017 we worked, we played, we cried and we laughed. 2017 brought us a perfect, wonderful baby boy. Wyatt is seriously one of the brightest lights in my life. Becoming a mother has been wonderful and I'm grateful that with each passing day it seems to get easier and more fun. It was rough going for the first few weeks, with "baby blues" and sleepless nights. But now whenever Josh and I sit and look at the cute faces our baby makes, when we listen to his giggles I can't help but feel like we are a puzzle, each making the other whole. We tried to do as many fun things as we could before I gave birth in July. For Josh's 28th birthd...

Mom Goals: Make more meaningful home movies!

One of my goals as a mother is to try and take lots of videos of my kids and family as we grow up. We live in a world full of technology. It is everywhere all the time... which for me, is a double edged sword. I like it and I hate it! But I am so pumped that we have such easy access to cameras and videos all day long so that I can capture so many of the fun things happening around us. The video above I made back when Wyatt was almost 6 weeks old and it is to one of my absolute favorite songs! It's called "If You Asked Me To" by Mckenzie Porter (she's Canadian!) and the music video she made is adorable. As a kid my favorite Sunday pass time was to watch home movies and look through photo albums. I want the same thing for my kiddos (and me) in the future so NOW is the time for me to break out the video camera (and iPhone camera, lol) as well as keep up with my tradition of printing a photo book every December for Christmas! Two years down, a million to go! Now for...
